Early Day Ranger Station
This log cabin, built in 1914, was known as
the Elk Creek Ranger Station. It is typical of
ranger stations built in the early 1900's. The
forest ranger was primarily a custodian in
those days and did his traveling on horseback.
He was concerned primariliy with controlling
forest fires, livestock numbers and timber
cutting.
A modern transportation system and the
complexities of the modern ranger's work
have made these early day ranger stations
obsolete. Today their falue is largely
historical.
